SoFi Stadium, venue for the 2023 Gold Cup finals.

Perhaps the most spectacular of the US’s mega stadiums, the SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, with its wrap-around video screen, will host the final of the Gold Cup. It is the first time the Gold Cup has visited the SoFi and the stadium’s first major soccer showpiece final.

The SoFi will also be a host venue for the 2026 World Cup and the venue for the finals of the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028.

Initially known in the planning stage as the Aztec Stadium, the 35,000 capacity Snapdragon Stadium is an outdoor facility located on the campus of San Diego State University.

Following the departure of the NFL’s Chargers, focus began on building a new stadium for the university’s American Football team the Aztecs that was modern.

The stadium broke ground in August 2020 and opened two years later in August 2022.

Stadium capacity is currently about 28,000 but can be expanded to 40,000.

April 15 – Using the backdrop of the 2023 Gold Cup Draw at the spectacular SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, Concacaf officially launched its ‘Bigger Game’ social impact strategy.

The Bigger Game’s mission is to provide football and social development opportunities which benefit communities across Concacaf’s 41 member associations.

At the launch, on the pitch of the SoFi Stadium, which saw local youth training and playing matches, the mayor of Inglewood James T Butts thanked Concacaf for coming to the city saying: “Sports is a microcosm of social development… Focussing on a bigger game is focussing on the development of our game to contribute to a better society.”

The strategy will see Concacaf initiate and support grassroots football initiatives and social programs which aim to tackle some of the most pressing issues faced by communities in the region.

Newly opened CITYPARK Stadium in St Louis, Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego and the TQL Stadium in Cincinnati are all first-time hosts.
