July 19 – The BBVA Stadium in Monterrey, Mexico, was rocking for the clash of Concacaf’s giants, World Champions USA and Olympic Champions Canada.

It was the final that everyone had expected and most had wanted to see. The US and Canada had dominated the competition from the start and they worked their routes to the final, neither team conceding a goal.

The US still haven’t conceded a goal, taking the regional honours and the automatic slot at the 2024 Olympics in Paris with a 1-0 win delivered by an Alex Morgan penalty.

July 19 – Jamaica took third place in the Concacaf W Championship with a Kalyssa Vanzanten goal in extra time for a 1-0 win over Costa Rica in a baking BBVA Stadium in Monterrey, Mexico.

Jamaica have been the big success story of this championship, starting off with a surprise 1-0 win over hosts Mexico, and finishing with World Cup qualification for the second successive time – no other Caribbean nation has qualified for a men’s or women’s World Cup twice – and a place on the podium.

July 15 – Canada progressed to the final of Concacaf W Championship with a 3-0 win over Jamaica, which now sets up a showdown between the Olympic Champions and the World Champions, USA, at the BBVA Stadium in Monterrey, Mexico – one of the venues for the 2026 World Cup.

Canada, with the exact same record as the USA, have gone all the way to the final unbeaten, scoring 12 goals without conceding any.

July 15 – The world champions USA dispatched a tired looking Costa Rica 3-0 to progress to the final of the Concacaf W Championship and a shot at the qualifying slot for the 2024 Olympics in Paris.

For the US it was very much job done, so far. Both teams had already qualified for the 2023 World Cup with the Costa Ricans making it for the second time in their history having qualified in 2015.

July 11 – The USA ruined Mexican chances of redemption at their home-hosted Concacaf W Championships with a goal in the final minute.

The US maintained their unbeaten run and ended any lingering hopes the Mexicans had of qualification for the 2023 World Cup.

July 10 – US coach Vlatko Andonovski is happy that his team have qualified for next year’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand but is very clear when he says “the job is not done yet.”

July 10 – After two wins in their group, and securing qualification for the 2023 World Cup, Canada’s head coach Bev Priestman says the third game against Costa Rica is important for her team to find a rhythm.

Canada opened with a 6-0 win against Trinidad and Tobago but five of the goals came in the last 25 minutes. Against Panama, Canada dominated with 69% of possession in a game that was fractured by the endless stoppages as Panama did everything they could to slow the game.

July 8 – Olympic champions Canada secured their semi-final place in the Concacaf W Championship, guaranteeing them a spot at World Cup 2023, with a 1-0 win over Panama.

It will be Costa Rica’s second trip to a World Cup having played in the 2015 edition in Canada.

In the end it was a convincing win over a Trinidad team that was reduced to 10 players on 22 minutes after Kedie Johnson received her second yellow card.

July 8 – Haiti scored three against Mexico to set up a winner takes all final group clash with Jamaica for automatic World Cup 2023 qualification.

It was an exciting match but a miserable evening for a Mexican team that promised so much but in the end has not delivered a goal in two games.

The sun may have been down at kick off but the heat was high and the temperature was about to get turned up with two teams not afraid to get physical and both of them needing a win to stay in World Cup contention.

Panama, who lost by three to a stylish Costa Rica, look to have their work cut out and will again be reliant on star goalkeeper Yenith Bailey to keep them in the game.

Mexico are still ruing the missed chances in their 1-0 loss to Jamaica and if they are to have any chance of automatic qualification to the 2023 World Cup need a big win against Haiti but will still need to come away with something from their final match with world champions USA.

July 5 – For 79 minutes Trinidad and Tobago bravely rode their luck against a dominant Canadian team. And then disaster struck as four goals in the final 11 minutes turned a tough evening into a 6-0 miserable one for the Caribbean debutants.

Canada coach Bev Priestman was understandably pleased, and no doubt a little relieved, with a final score which was more in line with the pre-match predictions for the Olympic champions over a young and developing Trinidad and Tobago squad.

July 5 – Costa Rica opened their Concacaf W Championship challenge in style with a 3-0 win over Panama.

It is the first time these two nations have met in a Concacaf W finals, and it was an impressive start for the Costa Ricans who at 37th are the fourth highest ranked Concacaf team in the world rankings. Panama are ranked 57th.

Costa Rica were on the scoresheet after just eight minutes when Portland Thorns midfielder Raquel Rodriguez scored from a corner taken by Cristin Granados.

July 5 – Hosts Mexico were stunned by an early Khadija Shaw goal, leaving them with a mountain to climb if they are qualify for the semi-finals of the CWC and an automatic 2023 World Cup spot.

July 4 – Concacaf president Victor Montagliani has sent a message across the region saying that he hopes the 2022 Concacaf W Championship “demonstrates to women and girls in our region that they belong in football, and that the sport is as much for them as anybody else.”

Writing on the Concacaf website before the opening matches of the eight-team finals in Monterrey, Mexico, he said: “I want to recognize and thank everyone who supports the continued growth of women’s football in Concacaf.”

The Concacaf W Championship is the start of a new eco-system for the women’s international game in the region and has already seen more participation than ever before with 30 nations competing for six of the eight places at the Monterrey finals (the US and Canada per-qualified as World and Olympic champions).
