Infantino backed Trump for Nobel Peace Prize but it wasn’t a winning ticket

October 10 – Not US President Donald Trump, but María Corina Machado has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

On Friday, the Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded the prize to the Venezuelan pro-democracy politician, citing “her tireless work promoting democratic rights for the people of Venezuela and for her struggle to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy.”

Nobel Committee chairman Jorgen Watne Frydnes described her as “a woman who keeps the flame of democracy burning amidst a growing darkness.”

Trump has long believed he should win the Nobel Peace Prize. “BLESSED ARE THE PEACEMAKERS!” read the end of Mr. Trump’s social media post announcing a deal between Israel and Hamas after two years of war. In February, Trump said: “They will never give me a Nobel Peace Prize. It’s too bad. I deserve it, but they will never give it to me.”

Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Barack Obama and Jimmy Carter are the only four American presidents who have received the prize.

On Thursday, FIFA boss Gianni Infantino had backed Trump to win. He wrote on Instagram: “President Donald J. Trump definitely deserves the Nobel Peace Prize for his decisive actions.👏”

Infantino first congratulated Trump and the countries involved in the peace talks that have led to a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas. Infantino wrote: “Congratulations to the 🇺🇸 USA and President Donald J. Trump, 🇶🇦 Qatar, 🇪🇬 Egypt, 🇹🇷 Türkiye and all the countries that collaborated to make the ceasefire and agreement on the first phase of the peace process in the Middle East happen. Peace is great news and is giving new hope for all. Everyone around the world should now fully support this peace process.”

Infantino has enjoyed a strong relationship with Trump. He attended Trump’s inauguration as the 47th president of the US, and last summer Trump watched the final of FIFA’s new Club World Cup between Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain in New Jersey, where he was front and center of the trophy presentation. Next year, the United States will co-host the 2026 World Cup with Canada and Mexico.
