Rangers’ Martin needs police protection after another dismal performance

October 6 – With a win percentage of 31%, Rangers FC boss, Russel Martin, would probably love to be in a witness protection programme as the anger from the Gers faithful is palpable at Ibrox. The mood around the club has turned toxic, and after a 1-1 draw against Falkirk, the dam has broken.

At the end of the game, around 30 Rangers ultras gathered by the team bus, chanting for Martin’s removal and attempting to block the players’ exit. Police intervention was needed. Martin, under heavy security, was escorted across the pitch to a side door before being driven away before the supporters could vent their full fury.

It was just last week when angry supporters cornered sporting director Kevin Thelwell and chief executive Patrick Stewart in a hotel lobby, demanding answers after another dismal performance.

The days of Rangers competing with Celtic as the ‘Big Two’ of Scottish football feel a long way off, and when you lose the supporters, there can only be one choice. With an international break coming up, the Rangers board has few options left to save the club’s season, and Martin’s departure looks like being the first and obvious one.

It will also mean Rangers have changed manager or head coach in 2021, 2022, 2023, and twice in 2025. Former boss Steven Gerrard has been linked with a return to the post.
